Aliens have landed on earth for over thirty years and have been locked in a ghetto called District 9, located in South Africa. The simple plot of this film, but only in appearance.
I have to say the truth: I went to see him only because I read that name on the poster. Yes, by just that name. A manufacturer usually worth the price of 8 € to see the product.
And I must say that investment never been more appropriate: by far the most valuable film I've seen this year. The newcomer (to the movies, of course) Blomkamp knows how to move and know what to talk about. He has a clear idea and, in fact, nothing is left to chance . He, the special effects wizard, takes us on screen prawns as they are called in the film, that being so technologically advanced and superior, end up living in a Bidonville first class, subject to regular checks by the government and, in the main scenes of the film, a sort of "eviction".
District 9 is a film that is divided between fiction and Apartheid, including special effects and racism, between us and them. As I said before nothing is left to chance and every item finds its proper place. It is thanks to the protagonist that we can find out more about these aliens, their psychology and their being, ultimately, victims. It took the "passage of the fence" to allow the viewer to feel the reasons for prawns, not just those of the population of Johannesburg (again, certainly not chosen at random).
The director just wants to make us understand what is happening every day in the world, but using the metaphor to make alien grip on the viewer. Do not want to divert anyone's attention and that is why, perhaps, that the cast includes big names. Only the stark stage, the protégé of Peter Jackson, who with this film requires hard on the Hollywood scene.
A film that shakes the banality and apathy in which cinema has fallen, that holds you tight as a violin string from beginning to end in a crescendo of action citazionistica (from a Cronemberg Verhoeven) and culminating in the most unexpected ways.
Of note, the interpretation of Sharlto Copley, compelling and exciting, worthy of note are the use of computer graphics: something extraordinary.
short, the film moves, shakes, beats and thought-provoking. It was a long time since I was following a film so compelling, thanks also to the television report execution-style - not very original, perhaps, but certainly not yet in effect and totally abused.
Definitely a piece that will become a classic in the genre. Definitely a movie to watch and to think about. Definitely a piece to have in the collection and that will lay the foundation for many of the next sci-fi .... and meanwhile wait for the next Blomkamp's work to see if it is a passing meteor, or if it can be confirmed.
